Roof cleaning

Moss, lichen and algae cleared from your roof using low pressure methods that look after the tiles.

What it involves

How we approach roof cleaning

Yorkshire weather is hard on a roof. Damp winters and shaded, north-facing pitches give moss and lichen everything they need, and once it takes hold it holds water against the tiles and blocks gutters and valleys.

There are several methods to clean a roof, depending on the tiles, access and condition. We visit every roof in person before the clean to assess it, and we’ll talk you through all the available methods and which one best suits your roof.

01

A look at the roof first

We check the condition of the tiles, ridge and flashing before anything else, and tell you honestly if a clean is not the right answer.

02

Choosing the best cleaning method

Clean using the chosen method, as discussed during the initial visit.

03

Soft wash and treatment

A low pressure rinse followed by a biocide that keeps working on spores long after we have packed up.

04

Clearing up after ourselves

Gutters, downpipes, paths and borders are cleared of debris and the site is left tidy.

Why it matters

Protects the roof covering

Removing moss stops water sitting on tiles and reduces frost damage over the winter months.

Keeps drainage working

Loose moss is the usual cause of blocked gutters and overflowing downpipes.

Lifts the whole property

A clean roof changes the look of a house more than almost any other outside job.

What is included

Also available for commercial premises

We clean commercial roofs too. Units, warehouses, farm buildings, schools and rented properties are all part of what we do, and we can work outside opening hours or at weekends to keep disruption down. Method statements and risk assessments are available if your site needs them.

Common questions

Roof cleaning FAQs

Will pressure washing damage my roof tiles?

We very rarely put high pressure anywhere near a roof. Moss is scraped off by hand and the surface is then treated with a biocide, so the tiles and the bedding stay where they should be. If a roof is too fragile to work on safely, we will tell you straight away.

Most terraced and semi-detached homes around Skipton take a single day. Larger detached properties, or roofs with heavy moss growth and blocked gutters, can run into a second day. We will give you a realistic timescale with your quote.

For most homes in this part of Yorkshire, every four to five years keeps things under control. North facing roofs and properties under trees tend to need attention a little sooner.

Yes. Moss removal always brings debris down into the gutters, so clearing and flushing them is part of the job rather than an extra on the invoice.
